Program/Construction Management (PM/CM)
Parsons was commissioned by the Sharjah Airport Authority (SAA) to provide Project Management Consultancy (PMC) services for the expansion of Sharjah International Airport (SIA). This involved building a new terminal while refurbishing the existing one and undertaking airside (e.g., upgrading taxiways) and landside works. The project was divided into several phases to minimize disruptions to the ongoing airport operations. Parsons is responsible for overseeing all project stages – from initial planning and design to construction, testing and commissioning, and handover.
A Focus On Speed And Service
The Sharjah airport expansion will increase its capacity to accommodate up to 20 million passengers a year while improving the existing infrastructure to enhance the traveler experience.
The central project theme is focused on meeting a ‘20 minutes in, 20 minutes out’ timeframe for each passenger. This philosophy inspired our overall facilities design and development approach so passengers could safely and securely depart, transfer or go through arrivals within this time frame.
This philosophy inspired our overall facilities design and development approach so passengers could safely and securely depart, transfer or go through arrivals within this time frame. We also worked with the client to obtain an ‘Optimum’ Level of Service (LoS) in line with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) best practices.
In addition to conducting in-depth program studies and creating detailed technical and master plans, we also worked with various stakeholders, such as the local authorities, government agencies, utility companies, and contractors, to drive efficient project delivery.
Managing A Brownfield Project
Since the land that Sharjah International Airport is built on was used previously and once commercially developed, the project was considered a brownfield project. In order to allow the construction of the new facilities, detailed demolition, relocation, and phasing had to be developed. In close engagement with stakeholders, a plan was prepared and executed to ensure minimum disruption to ongoing operations.
Incorporating Innovation And Technology
For this project, we used modern camera technology able to provide real-time insights and help keep track of progress efficiently in specific projects. As such we ensure effective monitoring and prompt decision-making for specific projects.
