Engineering, Program/Construction Management (PM/CM)
Built to keep pace with growing traveler numbers to Qatar, the Hamad International Airport (HIA) in Doha spans over 22km2, and has 600,000m2 of terminal space, 41 boarding gates, and 22 remote stands. It serves over 360,000 flights and 30 million passengers annually, accommodates 50 commercial airlines, and operates two parallel runways. Recognized as the ‘World’s Best Airport’ in 2021, this success is due to its management, staff, and efficient operations. Contributing factors include the world-class terminal design, the quality of the internal environment, and the effectiveness of its transportation infrastructure (which together facilitate quick, easy, and stress-free passenger movements).
Minimizing Disruption And Maximizing The Customer Experience
The client not only wanted to expand its facilities to meet demand; it also had the goal of creating one of the best airports in the world. Therefore, every aspect of the job required a focus on the end customer – from the initial design through to the build process and beyond.
Being a ‘live’ airport, a key objective was to mitigate disruption to all airport activities. This required the careful planning and coordination of all works undertaken at both airside and landside. The same approach was required to install the communications services. To ensure all communication networks were fully functional by the opening date, we carried out detailed stakeholder engagement.
Following the expansion, the client now has a world-class airport that can accommodate up to 53 million passengers annually. This has been a team effort, with all parties working in a highly collaborative manner to achieve the client’s overall objectives.
