Alternative Project Delivery
We’re leading the Dupont bridge replacement effort as the design-build partner responsible for delivering a safer, more resilient, and more efficient crossing on SR 30 over the St. Andrews Bay Intracoastal Waterway. This project strengthens civilian and military mobility while supporting the surrounding community and environment.
Project Description And New Alignment
The existing 4-lane, 2,750-foot structure will be replaced with twin 4-lane bridges on a new alignment. The new bridges will provide a 75-foot vertical clearance, which is 25 feet higher than the current bridge. We’re accounting for deep water, scour conditions, vessel collision forces, and the glide path of Tyndall Air Force Base, located only two miles away. Furthermore, we’re designing the project to improve long-term function and safety.
Our Role As Lead Designer
Parsons (through legacy BCC Engineering) is managing full design and construction services, including roadway, structures, drainage, ITS, signing and pavement marking, lighting, environmental permitting, and US Coast Guard coordination. Our integrated approach ensures a safe, resilient, and future-ready bridge for the region.
Key Features Of The Dupont Bridge Replacement
The Dupont bridge replacement includes several mobility, safety, and community improvements such as:
- Four 12 foot travel lanes on each new bridge
- A 12 foot barrier separated shared use path on each structure
- Two scenic overlooks for pedestrians and cyclists
Additionally, the elevated deck will reduce storm surge impacts and supports future sea level rise adaptation.
- Aerial View of the Dupont Bridge
- Dupont Bridge Replacement Construction
- Piers View of the Dupont Bridge
- Observation Deck
Structural Strength And Resilience Solutions
The main channel span uses a 375 foot steel plate girder, which requires advanced finite element modeling and coordinated construction sequencing. We’re also designing the channel piers to withstand vessel collision forces up to 3900 kips. Moreover, we’re providing erosion protection that reduces soil loss during major storm events and supports long-term durability.
Environmental Protection And Special Permitting
We take a comprehensive approach to environmental care throughout the dupont bridge replacement, including:
- Stormwater management facilities
- Drainage systems that protect the bay ecosystem
- Multiple environmental permits
- A US Coast Guard Bridge Construction Permit
These measures maintain water quality and preserve sensitive coastal resources.
Aesthetic And Community Focused Design
We’re incorporating architectural and visual features that reflect the local coastal environment. These enhancements strengthen community connection and improve the bridge’s appearance for residents and visitors.
