Parsons Energy Management Solutions

Parsons Energy Management Solutions

We’ve made it our mission to empower utilities and grid operators to deliver affordable, secure, and sustainable energy services to their communities. Our comprehensive Energy Management and Analytics platform unifies utility operational data into a “single pane of glass”, allowing operators to easily access utility data, measure operational health, perform data analytics, and make informed decisions from a single integrated data management platform. From Meter and Operational Data Management (MODM) to the next generation Demand Response Management System (DRMS), our solutions future-proof utility and grid operations, optimize efficiency, enhance customer satisfaction, and achieve grid resiliency.

Meter And Operational Data Management (MODM)

Smart meters can be used for more than collecting billing data. They can help utilities find power outages, predict transformer failure, monitor power quality, and identify grid balancing problems. Efficient management of meter operational data can be a challenge without the right tools, but we have the solution.

We developed our Meter and Operational Data Management (MODM) system to collect, analyze, and deliver utility-focused analytics of near real-time energy usage for actionable insights. We also designed it to optimize usage, reduce costs, and solve unique utility business problems. Our MODM system integrates utilities Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) with daily processes like billing, contract management, and customer service and allows utilities to get the most out of their smart metering investment.

Interoperability Service Bus

One of the biggest challenges for utilities is the lack of system integration capabilities for optimized data sharing that will maximize the value of their technology investments. Parsons takes and “Integration First” approach to our Utility Management Solutions. At the heart of our Platform is our proprietary Interoperability Service Bus.

Our Interoperability Service Bus solves this challenge by delivering enterprise integration and service-oriented architecture support, including web service brokering and auditing functions that make on-boarding web services much easier. Our software-agnostic solution supports standard vendor applications like MultiSpeak or CIM, in addition to all versions of these methods or variants developed by individual vendors.

Analytics And Operational Intelligence

Faced with the rapid growth of digital technologies and the challenge of utilizing the data that is being collected, utilities need data analytics solutions that provide powerful insights to identify and resolve key utility business problems, enhance operational efficiencies, improve reliability, and reduce costs.

Utility Data Management

Our MODM platform optimizes data utilization by providing additional analytics modules, dashboards, reporting tools, data management,  and flexible data mining tools that identify and resolve current and future operational issues.

Our data analytics can resolve utility challenges and provide actionable insights for:

  • Line Loss Analysis: Pinpoints where losses are occurring and where operational corrections can be made to recover revenue and increase the efficiency of the distribution system.
  • Transformer Load Analysis: Provides insight to transformer loading conditions and failure prediction. In turn, the utility can provide an improved predictive maintenance model that will result in better asset utilization and management, resulting in improved system reliability and customer satisfaction.
  • Voltage Analysis: Allows utilities to quickly identify the location and frequency of voltage exceptions and take corrective action within their guidelines. Uses voltage and load conditions to identify charging loads, avoid failures, and implement time-of-use (TOU) rates.
  • Data Analytics & Data Mining Tools: Provides utilities access to their data directly allowing for utility driven integrations to data warehouses, data lakes, and applications such as power BI. Additionally, in house data analytics and data mining tools are provided through the Data Analysis, Rate Engine, and Charting Modules.
  • Event Management: In todays utility data environment, events and alarms on the grid can come from many sources such as SCADA, AMI, OMS, and MDM. Parsons’ Event Management, brings all of this data into a single pane of glass for analysis and action. Analyze event and alarm trends. And set actions by either automatically or manually triggering work orders based on the event/alarm anomalies.
  • Virtual Endpoints: Create aggregate meters for analysis, load planning, and more by using device attributes such as substation, feeder, rate code, etc.

Demand Response Management System (DRMS)

Our Demand Response Management System (DRMS) Program and Analytics Solution provides utilities with a powerful, intuitive platform to efficiently manage Demand Response programs. With the increasing demands on electric systems—such as the rise of EVs and data centers—understanding demand patterns is critical to crafting effective and sustainable Demand Response programs.

Parsons takes an integration-first and analytics-driven approach, leveraging data from existing systems—such as AMI, CIS, GIS, SCADA, OMS, and MDM—to provide a unified, single-pane-of-glass view of utility data. This approach empowers utilities to make informed decisions, optimize load shedding, and improve grid performance.

Key Features and Benefits

The Parsons DRMS system streamlines and enhances Demand Response operations by:

  • Planning Smarter:
    • Leveraging advanced analytics to forecast peaks, identify load reduction opportunities, set demand reduction targets, and discover new program participants.
    • Automating processes like settlement calculation and system monitoring.
  • Managing Efficiently:
    • Streamlining rebate processing and automating measurement and verification.
    • Using load control groups to trigger events managed by AMI Load ControlSCADA SystemsADMS Systems, as well as other third party control and aggregation services to control T-StatBatteryEV Charger, and other devices.
    • Simplifying event dispatch to third-party aggregators through a centralized platform.
  • Analyzing Effectively:
    • Providing robust reporting and visualization tools to deliver actionable insights into program performance, participant behavior, and grid health.
    • Summarizing and visualizing program success metrics, including DERMS performance.
  • Saving Time and Money:
    • Reducing manual processes, enabling data-driven decisions, and optimizing program operations to lower costs and improve outcomes.
  • Utilizing Accurate Usage Data:
    • Measuring the success of Demand Response programs with precise data to track and optimize performance.
  • Enabling Scenario-Based Planning:
    • Using “what-if scenarios” to analyze and understand different load groups that can achieve the load reduction required for specific events, enabling utilities to make strategic, informed decisions.

Why Choose Parsons DRMS?

At Parsons, we designed Parsons DRMS to be the ultimate decision support solution for utilities looking to optimize their Demand Response programs. By consolidating data from multiple systems, our platform provides actionable insights into grid health and program performance, helping utilities achieve their goals faster, smarter, and more effectively.

Whether a utility is looking to grow or launch its Demand Response program, Parsons DRMS helps teams operate more efficiently, reduce costs, and deliver measurable results.

DRMS

Our Demand Response Management System (DRMS) is a Virtual Top Node (VTN) Environment that utilizes OpenADR and proprietary API’s to manage one to many Demand Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) or Virtual End Nodes (VENs). Being an integration first solution, we’re able to tie in data from many auxiliary systems such as AMI, OMS, GIS, CIS, SCADA, ADMS, and MDM to bring the picture together and make specific Demand Response action plans in the time of an event by utilizing the grid connectivity and power data from these auxiliary systems. This enables utilities to do automated events, with smart load grouping and load curtailment planning, analyze impacts of the grid before, during and after an event, and plan to expand their programs by identifying key loads to improve their programs.
