PerfluorAd™
PerfluorAd™: AFFF Cleanout And Transition Services
TRS Group (TRS), a Parsons company, is a global provider of PFAS and thermal remediation technologies for the in situ treatment of soil, groundwater, and bedrock, and the ex situ treatment of soil piles and dredged sediment. TRS is also the exclusive North American licensee of the patented PerfluorAd™ technology for the cleaning of aqueous film forming foam (AFFF) fire suppression systems (mobile and fixed) prior to fluorine-free foam (F3) transitions.
How To Manage An F3 Transition Using PerfluorAd
TRS typically reduces per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations in AFFF fire suppression systems by more than 99%. Developed by Cornelsen GmbH, PerfluorAd is ideal for cleaning fire trucks, fixed systems (e.g., airport hangars, fuel storage, chemical manufacturing, etc.), storage vessels, hoses, and piping. The method, which includes treatment of rinse water, generates little to no waste. Cleaning with PerfluorAd reduces your costs by more than 90% compared to replacing AFFF-impacted systems.
How Does PerfluorAd™ Work?
PerfluorAd is a biodegradable cleaning agent that forms a bond with PFAS, creating particles TRS can filter and remove.
- Step 1: TRS generates a PerfluorAd™ Solution.
- Step 2: TRS circulates the solution through each part of the fire suppression system, repeating the process until reaching client-defined, acceptable effluent concentrations.
- Step 3: TRS captures the spent solution and mixes it with an additional dose of PerfluorAd to form PFAS-containing particles.
- Step 4: TRS separates the particles from the solution.
- Step 5: TRS consolidates the recovered particles for off-site disposal.
- Step 6: TRS polishes the remaining rinsewater with granular activated carbon and, with regulatory approval, discharges the water to the sanitary sewer, dramatically reducing disposal costs.

Use Case: Using PerfluorAd for AFFF Cleanout of a Fire Truck
While being phased-out from firefighting systems, PFAS are found in AFFF equipment. To cope with this challenge, we have optimized a method for cleaning PFAS out of fire extinguishing equipment during F3 transitions. Watch below as our employee-owners set up the system and removes toxic PFAS from the fire fighting equipment in less than a week.
Client Testimonials
"It was a pleasure to work with and learn from TRS as they performed an AFFF cleanout of a firefighting vehicle at a major airport on the West Coast using their patented PerfluorAdTM solution. TRS brought a wealth of knowledge and technical expertise in decontaminating firefighting apparatuses exposed to PFAS-containing AFFF, leading to a successful project implementation. We look forward to working with TRS again in the future."
