Parsons Completes Construction of Key SWPF Facility on Schedule, Under Budget
Parsons has completed construction and startup testing of the Next-Generation Solvent (NGS) Facility at the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Savannah River Site (SRS), a project that was completed on schedule in under a year and delivered below the target cost of $20 million.
Deploying the Next-Generation Solvent in SWPF is expected to significantly increase processing rates of the plant. The NGS facility, which will support the Salt Waste Processing Facility (SWPF) at SRS, will stay in stand-by mode until SWPF completes its commissioning and startup and demonstrates successful operation. Completion of the physical construction of the facility enables DOE to meet its commitment to South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control to implement NGS in SWPF within 28 months after commencing initial radioactive operation of this facility.
“Our workforce deserves tremendous credit for delivering this facility in under a year from groundbreaking to completion,” said Frank Sheppard, Parsons Senior Vice President and SWPF Project Manager. “Completing a project such as the NGS facility within this timeframe and significantly under budget is a tremendous achievement by any standard. We utilized an experienced workforce and incorporated lessons learned from our work on the main facility into the NGS effort.”
Once operational, SWPF will process the majority of the site’s salt waste inventory by treating highly radioactive salt solutions stored in underground tanks at SRS. Removing salt waste, which comprises over 90 percent of the total waste in the SRS tank farms, is a major step towards emptying and closing the site’s remaining 43 high-level waste tanks.
