Parsons’ Smith Delivers ONU Commencement Speech, Receives Honorary Degree: Alumnus Renowned for Her Engineering and Leadership Accomplishments

PASADENA, CA (May 13, 2018) – On Sunday, May 13, Parsons Group President Carey Smith delivered the commencement address for the Ohio Northern University (ONU) Class of 2018 undergraduates degree recipients. Ms. Smith, an ONU alumnus, was also presented with an honorary doctorate degree.

“Carey Smith is renowned for her technology-driven engineering and leadership accomplishments,” said Ohio Northern University President Daniel DiBiasio. “She continues to make significant contributions to her professional field and add great value to the businesses she leads and the customers she serves. Ms. Smith’s commencement message connected the university’s motto “Ex diversitate vires” (“From diversity…strength”) as a foundation for success—both personally and professionally—with the importance of exploring the unfamiliar to create the future.

“A truly diverse view of the world doesn’t show up and ring the doorbell or arrive by text. You need to go find it, in your own way, on your own terms, in your own time,” said Smith in her address. “Explore, search, and discover, and be willing to go into unfamiliar areas.”

Ms. Smith graduated from ONU in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering followed by a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Syracuse University.
