PASADENA, CA (April 12, 2018) – Parsons is pleased to announce that it has been selected by Leidos, through a competitive process, as the general contractor to perform design, engineering, and construction management for Antarctic infrastructure improvement efforts under the Leidos Antarctic Support Contract with the National Science Foundation.
McMurdo Station, the logistics hub for the NSF-managed U.S. Antarctic Program and the largest research facility on the southernmost continent, was originally built more than sixty years ago. The station has grown organically in the interim and many of the structures still in use are aged, obsolete and energy inefficient. An independent review of the U.S. Antarctic Program in 2011 determined McMurdo Station’s aging infrastructure required upgrades to achieve more cost- and energy efficient and logistically streamlined operations. The needed infrastructure modernization will ensure that McMurdo Station remains a viable platform for supporting world-class Antarctic science for the next 35 to 50 years.
“We are very pleased to have Parsons as a teammate,” said Jerry McDonald, Leidos program director for the Antarctic Support Contract. “Their extensive experience in large construction facilities in remote locations such as Siberia, the Middle East, and the Canadian Arctic means they come to the table with knowledge of the challenges as well as enthusiasm for those same challenges.”
David Bird, Parsons program manager added, “Parsons is very proud to join the Leidos team as we work to ensure that important work in Antarctica is secured for the long term.”
In accordance with a Presidential mandate dating to the 1980’s and subsequently reaffirmed, NSF is responsible for operating and maintaining the U.S. Antarctic Program’s three year-round research stations, seasonal field camps, and research vessels. Leidos employs the contract staff who run the stations in support of the research funded by NSF. Leidos’ role includes managing logistics–including procurement of all food and supplies, operational support for science programs, and operation of two research vessels; onsite facilities engineering and construction; and facilitating transportation to and from the Southernmost Continent for nearly 3,000 people annually.
