Austin Transit Partnership is leading the development of Austin Light Rail, the city’s first light rail transit system. The proposed project will implement a 9.8‑mile light rail line connecting downtown Austin to north, south, and east Austin on dedicated rail lines with electric‑powered trains.
Phase 1 includes 15 strategically located stations, an operations and maintenance facility near the airport, and the procurement of 25 to 30 vehicles. The estimated capital cost is $7.1 billion. Austin Transit Partnership plans to seek 50 percent of the capital cost through the Federal Transit Administration Capital Investment Grants program.
Austin Light Rail increases transportation network capacity to meet existing and future travel demand, supports Austin’s population and employment growth, and supports the long‑term economic vitality of the city and the region. The project also improves transit access between affordable housing and jobs and enhances connectivity to regional activity centers identified in local land use plans.
