Overview

Join us on May 8, 2024 for a technical webinar regarding Using Molecular Biological Tools During Environmental Bioremediation: Application of the New ASTM International Standard.

Presentation Description

Background/Objectives

The assessment and characterization of biological processes associated with contaminant attenuation and remediation are supported and improved by the accurate and consistent use of molecular biological tools (MBTs). In November 2022, ASTM published a new international Standard Guide on the use of MBTs during environmental remediation projects. This presentation will introduce this new Standard Guide and will highlight topics addressed in the document.

Approach/Activities

The availability and use of MBTs has grown considerably over the past few years. The ASTM Standard Guide provides a detailed overview of MBTs and presents a framework through which project managers and other remediation professionals can select and apply MBTs at their sites. This Standard Guide was produced by national and international experts, with intended end-users to include site owners and operators, contractors, and State and Federal regulators.

Results/Lessons Learned

This presentation will summarize the new, international Standard Guide, including a review of commercially available MBTs, the process of choosing between MBTs during environmental remediation, and the basics of data interpretation. We’ll also discuss lessons learned regarding sample acquisition and shipping, the maintenance of data integrity, and pitfalls to avoid.

Presenters

Eleanor Jennings, PhD: Eleanor was one of the co-authors of the new ASTM International Standard. She is a principal environmental microbiologist and biogeochemist, as well as a subject matter expert in merging molecular and stable isotope technologies with traditional techniques to resolve complex environmental site investigations and remediation. She is also a Parsons Fellow and a Certified Environmental Scientist.
