Webinar | PFAS in the Environment: Evaluating Influences of Fate & Transport and Remedial Processes

June 12 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

Join us on June 12, 2024 for a technical webinar regarding PFAS in the Environment: Evaluating Influences of Fate & Transport and Remedial Processes.

Presentation Description

Fate and transport assessments for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) release areas are complicated by the wide range of physical and chemical characteristics of PFAS. In addition, past or current remedial actions for commingled contaminants can affect PFAS distribution and mobility. This presentation discusses analytical techniques used to develop a conceptual site model and evaluates the impact on PFAS by interim remedial actions designed for petroleum contaminants at a former fire protection training area in the interior of Alaska adjacent to the Yukon River.

Remedial investigation PFAS sampling conducted at the site included surface soil, subsurface soil, and groundwater sampling. Total Oxidizable Precursor (TOP) analysis was also performed on select samples. Results were evaluated using a variety of graphical and analytical techniques including spatial moment analysis to develop a conceptual site model.

Results/Lessons Learned

Evaluation of the data suggests an ongoing discharge of shorter-chain PFAS to groundwater, consistent with oxidation of precursor compounds in surface soil and transport to groundwater by infiltration from annual ponding events. Data also suggest reduced PFAS migration to groundwater by installation of a soil cover and enhanced oxidation of PFAS precursors by bioventing, both of which were installed as interim remedial actions for petroleum contaminants.
