Design
We are providing engineering, design, and environmental services for the largest capital infrastructure project in Ontario’s GO Expansion program: improvements along Metrolinx’s Lakeshore East Line.
The project includes corridor improvements along the Lakeshore East Line for about 50 kilometers from Oshawa to downtown Toronto. Furthermore, the overall scope introduces new tracks, switches, bridge modifications, and upgraded crossings.
Summary Of Structural Works
The structural works include several types of grade separations. The Lakeshore East corridor has about 57 crossings, including bridges, culverts, pedestrian bridges, pedestrian underpasses, and surface crossings. We plan to assess 28 structures for load-carrying capacity to determine whether they require widening or extension to support new track work. Some of these structures are newly built and only require a brief review. Additionally, we will deliver five new grade separations that convert surface crossings into vehicular or pedestrian structures. For example, these include the Morningside Road under-rail structure and the Highland Creek Bridge.
Supporting Structures And Facilities
The project also includes retaining walls, noise walls, ancillary structures, railway facilities, and new platforms. Moreover, these improvements will support the added capacity required for expanded rail service.
Civil Works And Drainage
Civil works include drainage upgrades within the corridor limits and, when appropriate, along adjacent roads. These drainage improvements will help protect new infrastructure and promote long-term reliability.
Utilities Management
Utility work includes protection-in-place or relocation activities. The approach depends on existing conditions within the corridor limits. Consequently, this coordination ensures safe construction and uninterrupted service for surrounding communities.
