Visionary and Enduring

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) operates the second largest rail transit system in the United States and the sixth largest bus network. Operating 24 hours a day, the network serves a population of 4 million as well as thousands of tourists who visit the nation’s capital each year. Parsons began working with Metro in 1966 as its general engineering consultant for the Metrorail system and has supported the agency under continuous contracts ever since.

From project inception through buildout, our work on the original 103-mile Metrorail network encompassed a full range of engineering services, including planning; preliminary design; development of general plans, standards, and directives; final design management; and construction support. In close association with Metro staff, we also developed the criteria and coordinated the design of Metrorail’s automatic train control system. This system includes a dual, computer-based operations control center and vital control equipment installed throughout the transit system.

With 50+ years of experience as Metro’s general engineering consultant, we currently lead a joint venture that provides on-call task order services for the network, focused on sound state of good repair and accommodating future growth. We are also the lead designer for the $1.18 billion Dulles Corridor Metrorail (Silver Line) Phase 2 design-build project, which will extend the line 11.4 miles to Dulles International Airport and beyond. This project for the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority involves design and construction of six transit stations, elevated bridges, and roadway improvements from Reston, VA, through the airport into Loudoun County, VA. Phase 2 of the Silver Line extension will be operated by Metro and run in the central median of a multi-lane, limited-access highway system.

Parsons is proud to bring its depth of experience and innovation to Metro and to urban transit systems around the world.
