Four case studies representing state-led\, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-led\, Potentially Responsible Party-led\, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission-regulated cleanup programs are used to compare regulatory approaches\, characterization methods\, remedial strategies\, and engineering considerations across a range of uranium mine and mill sites. \nResults/Lessons Learned\nSuccessful uranium site remediation requires integrating regulatory requirements\, geologic conditions\, radiological science\, engineering feasibility\, and long-term stewardship. DESCRIPTION:Background/Objectives\nGlobal climate change is a significant risk to global market stability and quality of life. Higher global temperatures can lead to extreme weather\, food\, and water shortages\, and increased outbreaks of infectious diseases. Mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is an important part of long-term climate sustainability. \nApproach/Activities\nMajor sources or GHG emissions are orphan oil and gas wells\, landfills\, and industrial plants. Utilizing innovative technology\, we locate\, identify\, and quantify GHG emissions rates to aid prioritizing sites for remedial action. Our internal research and development team has developed and installed novel biofilter media that efficiently oxidizes methane to reduce its GHG potential. \nResults/Lessons Learned\nAerial magnetic surveys are the only feasible tool for locating undocumented oil and gas wells over a project area. Methane quantification is a critical component of ranking point source emissions to maximize project benefits\, and methane biofilters are an innovative solution to treat waste gases where remediation is feasible. \nPresenter\nKYLE METZ Kyle is a petroleum geologist and project manager at Parsons.
