WEBINAR: Acid Rock Drainage Diversion Case Study: An Environmental and Water Quality Success Story
September 14 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT
Join us for a webinar from our experts regarding acid rock drainage diversion on September 14th at 12:30PM EDT.
Acid rock drainage (ARD) is a serious threat to water downstream of mining operations. The Faro Mine Remediation Project is one of the most complex mine remediation projects in Canada, with total of 320 million tons of exposed waste rock from which oxidation of sulfide minerals generates ARD. The North Fork Diversion Channel (NFDC) was constructed between 2018 and 2020 as an urgent works construction package to mitigate ARD impacts to surface water, groundwater, and aquatic habitats in North Fork Rose Creek.
The design objective for the NFDC was to improve water quality at a downstream compliance monitoring station. A non-contact water diversion channel was constructed to convey water from upstream and separate this water from the waste rock dump (WRD) and impacted seeps. A contact water collection and conveyance system was constructed to collect WRD-impacted seepage flowing into the creek, and transport it for temporary storage and subsequent treatment.
The NFDC project successfully separated the clean (non-contact) water from the mine-impacted (contact) water. Zinc levels decreased and were below effluent quality standards at the compliance point. Overall, the downstream water quality improved immediately. The water quality improvements and additional components in a fish habitat compensation plan enhanced aquatic habitat and health in North Fork Rose Creek.
Karen Leven, BSc. EP – Currently the Deputy Project Director at the Faro Mine Remediation Project, Karen has worked in the mining industry for 20 years, mainly in remote Northern Canada/Arctic locations. She has a BSc. in Environmental Science and is a certified Environmental Professional (EP) and Lead ISO Auditor.
Eric Domingue, P.Eng. – Currently the Director of Construction Management at the Faro Mine Remediation Project, Eric has 26 years of experience on large environmental remediation and heavy civil construction projects. He has been involved in the Faro Mine Remediation Project since 2013.
