Background/Objectives

Mining Environmental Management (MEM) is a complex multidisciplinary effort that requires extensive planning, with strategic inputs required throughout the mining lifecycle to reduce operational and closure liability. The solutions are often unique and complex given the nature of the geology, mining methods employed, and high degree of uncertainty in the conditions of the various mine wastes.

Approach/Activities

The Faro and Giant mines are the two largest and most complex mine closure projects in Canada, each with a different set of challenges. These sites will be used to highlight some of the key risks and challenges of mine closure. Physical and chemical processes and how they affect various mine site components, environmental management methods, design life, and other considerations will be discussed. The Faro water treatment program will be presented, including the in-situ treatability assessment used to determine the most cost-effective and compliant treatment process, and the subsequent design and construction of the treatment system.

Results/Lessons Learned

It is critical to manage the numerous aspects of MEM to drive cost-effective solutions that meet the owner’s requirements. The two case studies will demonstrate Parsons’ approach to managing site risks and closure plan implementation that provides the best value to the owner and meets the closure objectives.
