Join us on May 10, 2023 for a technical webinar regarding Lessons Learned in Applying PFAS Adsorption Technologies to Surface Water and Groundwater.
Background/Objectives
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of emerging contaminants that are being detected in a variety of matrices, including groundwater and surface water, due to widespread historical use. As PFAS continues to emerge as a major environmental contaminant, Parsons has been optimizing treatment technologies over the past 15 years to provide the most efficient solution for impacted
groundwater and surface water at various sites.
Approach/Activities
Parsons has performed over 30 bench and pilot scale treatment studies to evaluate a range of PFAS sorbents and ion exchange media including various granular activated carbon (GAC) media; ion exchange resins; and bentonite-based sorbents. Our pilot studies have informed full-scale designs that are currently in operation treating C8, C6, and a number of other target PFAS compounds in surface water, groundwater, and stormwater matrices.
Results/Lessons Learned
We will present a range of findings from our studies of treatment of PFAS-impacted water. Real data will be presented comparing GAC adsorption with ion exchange media in a variety of background water matrices. Information will also be provided regarding the scale-up of bench and pilot scale data to full-scale systems, along with unique lessons learned associated with the operation of such systems. Full-scale design optimization practices will be discussed that have been proven and are continuing to evolve to meet regulatory standards.
