Groundwater Treatment Plant Retrofit Using Native Iron for Fenton’s Treatment of 1,4-Dioxane.

April 9 @ 12:30 pm EDT

Webinar

Join us on April 9, 2025 at 12:30PM EST for a technical webinar regarding Groundwater Treatment Plant Retrofit Using Native Iron for Fenton’s Treatment of 1,4-Dioxane.

Presentation Description

Background/Objectives

A groundwater treatment plant (GWTP) was constructed for a global chemical manufacturing company in New Jersey in 2011. The GWTP was designed to treat metals, vinyl chloride, and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) to achieve New Jersey Groundwater Quality Standards for Class IIA (GWIIA). In 2015, New Jersey adopted an interim groundwater quality criterion of 0.40 μg/L for 1,4-dioxane, which was exceeded in both influent and effluent water at the GWTP.

Approach/Activities

Bench-scale treatability testing performed on site demonstrated the efficacy of Fenton’s reaction using hydrogen peroxide coupled with iron natively present in influent groundwater to treat 1,4-dioxane to below detection. Fenton’s reaction was successfully demonstrated during pilot-scale testing to achieve the GWIIA 1,4-dioxane criterion. The GWTP was retrofit in 2023 to accommodate Fenton’s reaction at full scale.

Results/Lessons Learned

Startup testing demonstrated reliable achievement of the 1,4-dioxane criterion, and the criterion has been consistently achieved during routine operation. The implementation of Fenton’s reaction has also treated vinyl chloride to below detection, eliminating the need for the existing air stripper. Sludge production levels have also decreased, and groundwater related odors have been largely eliminated. Fenton’s reaction has proven to be an innovative solution to address evolving treatment requirements at the GWTP.

Presenter

Ted Schoenberg, PHD, PE – Ted is a supervising process engineer and project manager in Parsons’ Industrial Water / Wastewater Treatment Practice. Ted coordinates bench- and pilot-scale treatability tests and performs concept and detail treatment design.
