PASADENA, CA (March 10, 2015) – Parsons is pleased to announce that the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has selected the corporation to design a new bridge between the cities of Virginia and Eveleth, MN. In addition to bridge design, the Parsons team will deliver the roadway, drainage, geotechnical, and structural health monitoring designs.
The 1,100‑ft‑long bridge will be the state’s tallest, with piers higher than 180 ft. The bridge will relocate Highway 53 to cross the decommissioned Rouchleau iron ore mining pit in the heart of the nation’s Iron Range in northeastern Minnesota.
“Parsons is pleased to once again partner with the MnDOT,” said Todd Wager, Parsons Group President. “This bridge project will not only serve the needs of the area’s motorists, it will also allow mining operations to continue in support of the nation’s demand for iron ore, a fundamental building block of our economy.”
Currently, Highway 53 within the project area is on an easement with the mineral owner and within a lease to a mining company. In accordance with a 1960 agreement, the land owner and mine operator have given MnDOT notice that they will be terminating the easement rights in order to continue their mining operations—necessitating the need for MnDOT to relocate the highway. To meet the deadline to relinquish the current highway easements, the bridge will be built under an accelerated schedule, with completion slated for fall 2017.Parsons (NYSE: PSN) is a leading provider of technology-driven solutions focused on the defense, intelligence, and critical infrastructure markets.
