Parsons Parsons

Project Description

Parsons provided program management, planning, conceptual design, detailed design, construction management and start-up services on all of the solids and gas handling expansion projects for the 450-million-gallon-per-day Hyperion Wastewater Treatment Plant in El Segundo, California.

The city of Los Angeles is required by the Clean Water Act to provide full secondary treatment of all wastewater, resulting in a larger volume of waste activated sludge. To accommodate the projected increase in waste sludge and twofold increase in digester gas, production will be upgraded and expanded.

The major components of the program are:

  • Sludge dewatering and drying facilities replacement and expansion
  • Process steam plant installation and boiler procurement
  • Modification and expansion of the desulfurization facility
  • Expansion of the low and intermediate pressure digester gas handling and storage facilities
  • Upgrade of the gas flare facility; upgrade and expansion of the plant distributed control system
  • New electrical switchyard installatio

The solids handling facilities expansion is online as scheduled, allowing for full secondary treatment required by the Clean Water Act.
