FLOOD CONTROL AND DAMS
Parsons provides a full range of engineering and design services, planning and construction phase services for dams, reservoirs, and hydroelectric facilities. This includes preparing geographic information system maps and graphics; performing hydrologic, hydraulic, and lake management assessments; preparing HEC-2 water surface profiles, including trestles and bridge/analysis and the expansion of the channels; planning the upgrade of drainage facilities; and preparing debris management plans using computer models to optimize the sediment removal and maximize the flood control and water conversation benefits. Our extensive experience includes completing comprehensive watershed assessments, flood abatement systems, and erosion control structures.
Projects:
- Diamond Valley Reservoir and Inland Feeder. Parsons recently completed overall management support for the seventh largest earthen dam in the world, which included the design and construction of three earthfill dams plus reservoir facilities for the Metropolitan Water District of California.
- Alafia River Watershed Management Plan. Parsons developed one of the largest watershed assessments for the 410-square-mile Alafia River basin in Florida, addressing flood protection, water quality, water supply, and ecological habitat restoration. We prepared the management plan to meet the level of service conditions.
- Stephenson Creek Watershed Management Plan. Parsons conducted watershed assessment and determined level of service protection for flood control, water quality, and biological conditions. A capital improvement program plan was developed and ranked for the watershed.
- Olivenhain Dam. Parsons is undertaking the design of Olivenhain Dam for the San Diego County Water Authority. Upon completion, the Olivenhain Dam and Reservoir will provide up to 6 months emergency supply to the county. At 320 feet, it is the highest roller-compacted concrete dam in the U.S.
