Parsons Parsons

SEPTA Smart Stations

Project Description

Parsons is leading a major design effort on new communications infrastructure upgrades for Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority’s (SEPTA) subway passenger stations to improve operations, life safety, and communications and to provide an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant environment. System upgrades encompass stations on the Market-Frankford Subway-Elevated (Blue Line), Broad Street Subway (Orange Line), and Subway-Surface Trolley (Green Line).

The initial design phase includes system improvements at 21 subway stations, with equipment located on platforms, mezzanines, stairs/corridors, elevators, communications rooms, station rooms, ticket sales offices, tunnel emergency exits, and subway portals. Life safety system design includes a new fire detection and alarm system at each station.

Communications design includes new audio-visual / public address (AVPA) system equipment at each location. All AVPA systems will provide ADA compliant passenger information control from a central control center with local message control capability. Communications design elements also include maintenance platform telephones, elevator call boxes, cashier booth intercom, and emergency exit telephones. The project design includes general station work, including ceiling upgrades, improved way finding and exit signs, and station lighting improvements.

The Parsons system design includes implementing CCTV cameras throughout each facility to improve daily transit operation efficiency. Over 350 cameras, including both fixed and pan-tilt-zoom, will be incorporated during the initial project phase. All cameras will connect to local matrix switch, digital video recorder (DVR) and node equipment, with video and control signals transported to the control center. Live video and/or retrieval of recorded video from all project stations can be accessed from assigned department personnel at the control center.

The system design also includes intrusion detection systems at select station rooms. Alarm signals are integrated into the central control center.
