PASADENA, CA (October 29, 2009) – Parsons, in conjunction with the Augusta Utilities Department, recently marked the completion of the expanded Highland Avenue Water Treatment Plant (HAWTP) with a dedication ceremony. The ceremony was attended by nearly 200 people, including Parsons Chairman and CEO Chuck Harrington and Parsons Group President Rich Wankmuller.
Parsons was the prime contractor on this $63 million construction management at-risk project and was responsible for the facility’s overall construction as well as for the project’s financial performance. Before the project was launched in November 2006, HAWTP could produce as much as 45 million gallons per day (MGD) of drinking water. The expanded plant will increase the capacity to 60 MGD.
“I was honored to be part of the dedication ceremony for the expanded Highland Avenue Water Treatment Plant,” Harrington said. “This state-of-the-art facility will help Augusta continue to meet the needs of its growing population.”
The project included the construction of new raw water intakes and piping inside the existing reservoirs, extensive and complex yard piping, flocculation and sedimentation basin refurbishment, renovations to the existing filters, construction of new filters, new chemical facilities and distribution systems, new SCADA and I&C systems, and administrative facilities, which include a control room, new laboratories, offices, and maintenance shops. Construction also included a complex pumping station for wash water systems and pumping systems for nearby Fort Gordon army base and a new 5 KV power distribution system. As part of the project, Mockingbird Hill Village—a popular landmark—was also removed, rebuilt, and reinstalled.
Residents began drinking water from the expanded Highland Avenue Water Treatment Plant about 2 months ago. The expansion should accommodate Augusta’s water needs through 2050.
