Pilot plants serve to produce material requirements in excess of 50 kgs. The equipment is considerably larger than a kilo lab, as large as 500 gallons (2000 liter) and closely mirrors the commercial size and configuration. Pilot facilities must by their very nature be multi-purpose and be easily reconfigured varying processing requirements. The design should consider:
- Equipment size
- Individual reactor train suites to minimize cross contamination
- Material flows (gravity assist)
- Materials of construction
- Reactor train configuration
