Historically, the only solution to the personnel protection/contamination problem involved outfitting operators in "moon suits" to keep them free of the product dust. However, the latest FDA and OSHA regulations require personal protective devices to be used as a second line of defense only. Controls must be designed into the system to provide a suitable operating environment.
The trend today in pharmaceutical research is toward smaller dosages of the active material targeting specific areas or organs. This is especially true in the oncology field. With this trend comes the preparation of material that is extremely active and must be absolutely contained. Containment equipment and systems are available to minimize exposure levels. In order to achieve acceptable levels, careful attention must be made to the dried product. Solids handling operations such as drying milling and blending are typically the problem areas.
