Multipurpose/Multi-Product Design
Chemical manufacturing facilities have to be designed as multipurpose/multi-product facilities. Even the larger plants must be designed to some degree as multipurpose facilities to accommodate a variety of products and new technologies. For that reason, commercial facilities have to be flexible and, in most cases, be non-product specific. The design then also addresses the unit operations as well as the actual process that is envisioned. Design issues to consider include:
- Containment of materials
- Cost and schedule
- Ease of maintenance
- Equipment arrangement

- Equipment selection
- Operability
- Processing conditions
