Parsons Parsons

The Parsons team has logged more than 650,000 man-hours without a single reportable safety incident or lost workday.
Project Overview

When the Soviet Union collapsed, the Russian Federation inherited a legacy of stockpiled weapons of mass destruction. To assist the Russian Federation and surrounding newly independent states with destroying or safeguarding the remaining weapons, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency awarded Parsons a contract to transport, disassemble, and destroy up to 40 sea-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs).

As the prime contractor, Parsons provides interface with the Russian Aviation and Space Administration and the Russian Munitions Agency, along with program and subcontractor management. By the end of 2004, Parsons disassembled and eliminated 17 SLBMs, each capable of carrying 10 nuclear warheads, with zero safety incidents.

The SLBM destruction process begins with transport of the missiles on isothermal railcars from their storage location to the plant where many of them were originally produced. The rockets are disassembled and their critical instrumentation components are eliminated. The solid propellant motor stages of the missiles are transported to another Parsons subcontractor, where the nozzles are removed and the motors ignited on a static burn stand. Auxiliary motors and pyrotechnics are also eliminated.
