NUCLEAR ANALYSIS AND REMEDIATION

Since 1949, Parsons has provided nuclear analysis and remediation services to the U.S. Department of Energy for all its research and weapons facilities.

The Department of Energy is modernizing existing weapons facilities and performing environmental restoration and remediation of former plutonium, uranium, and tritium production sites. Sites undergoing restoration are light water moderated reactors, fuel fabrication facilities, plutonium and uranium extraction facilities, and nuclear waste storage facilities.

One site undergoing environmental restoration and remediation is the former plutonium and uranium production facility at Hanford, Washington. Graphite moderated reactors, fuel fabrication facilities, plutonium and uranium extraction facilities, and nuclear waste storage facilities are being remediated. Parsons has completed more than 400 tasks at Hanford since 1990.

Another site is Savannah River in South Carolina, where we provide engineering and technical services. This site has stewardship over the nuclear weapons stockpile and is remediating decommissioned facilities and waste piles. We have completed over 800 engineering and remediation tasks supporting the safe stockpile stewardship and management, treatment, and disposal of radioactive waste.

The Fernald, Ohio, site function has evolved from production to waste management and environmental restoration. At Fernald, we have completed over 300 tasks in environmental compliance documentation; hazardous, mixed, and low level waste treatment siting; performance assessments; closure plans and monitoring; safety analysis; and community relations.

Rocky Flats, Colorado, is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Superfund site. Until 1989, the site manufactured nuclear components from plutonium, uranium, and beryllium, creating volumes of hazardous materials by-products in the process. Parsons completed over 200 tasks here, stabilizing waste piles; packaging and consolidating wastes; deactivating and decommissioning facilities; and performing environmental restoration.
