Parsons Parsons

Project Profile

In November of 2005, Parsons completed the construction phase of a performance-based, fixed-price contract to remove the source of perchloroethene (PCE) contamination from Site 10 at Buckley AFB in Aurora, Colorado. The performance based goal at this site is to reduce the source concentrations of PCE in groundwater from 30 milligrams per liter to less than 1 milligram per liter. To accomplish this goal, Parsons selected an approach that includes excavation and dewatering of the one acre source area. More than 50,000 cubic yards of soil were excavated to an average depth of over 32 feet. On-site soil screening methods were used to separate the most contaminated soil for disposal at a permitted RCRA D landfill. No hazardous waste was generated and groundwater entering the excavation was treated to remove 99 percent of the PCE prior to discharge.

The project also included the construction of a 1,400-foot sparging trench (pictured) to remove lower concentrations of PCE before they migrated off the base. Parsons will operate the sparging system and monitor the groundwater for the next three years to demonstrate compliance with the performance goals.
