Unexploded waste items come in all sizes and forms. They can be as minute as residue from explosives manufacturing and as large as bombs. They include pyrotechnics, chemical agents, rocket motors and booby traps.

Deterioration of ordnance items can cause blast or detonation effects; volatile organic compound emissions; releases of toxic fumes, lethal gases, and explosive residues; gross alpha and beta radiation; and other environmental impacts.

Many factors—geology, soil types, topography, and environmental and historic property access limitations—affect the performance of UXO detection and clearance technologies.
