Project Description

The Rainier Valley Link Light Rail Project is part of Sound Transit's 14-mile Central Link that will eventually connect downtown Seattle and SeaTac International Airport. The project entails major reconstruction of the Rainier Valley corridor.

Upon completion, the 4.3-mile alignment will have new water and sewer lines, power and communication lines, pavement, sidewalks, stations, and plazas. In some areas, the road will be widened to 175 ft to accommodate the light rail line, which runs down Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. Three outdoor stations will be built under this contract at the intersections of Edmunds, Othello, and Henderson streets. Track is assembled in 78-ft lengths and is prewelded into 300-ft lengths using continuous welded rail strings. The strings are transported to installation points throughout the corridor using specially designed rail carts that allow movement along paved areas. Work also includes expanding and enhancing the wetland mitigation site at Beer Sheva Park on the west shore of Lake Washington. Another portion of the work includes replacing the Cedar River Pipeline.

The Rainier Valley Link Light Rail project runs through a highly diversified and dense community area that is predominantly residential with multiple commercial districts. The area has some of the highest per capita transit ridership in the region. Community outreach and awareness is one of Parsons' top priorities on this project. Parsons employees have a strong commitment to the community in which they work: pedestrian access and safety is a top priority.
